Day 17 – Frustration

Today was a day of frustration. I really was hoping for an invite to a Food photography clinic; I knew it wouldn’t happen, but I was still bummed out. I deiced that I would cook and shoot deep-fried Twinkies to drowned my sorrows.  I ended up leaving work two hours late, and so the timing on every thing was pressed.  I ended up burning stuff, couldn’t find things I needed and my idea for the batter was a fail.  However, in my brilliancy I invited some friends over and they brought awesome brownies.  Those were “electron” (you can’t really call it film, can you) ready.

I really worked for this shot. I had great ambitions, but it just didn’t work the way I wanted. The chocolate wouldn’t work, the raspberry coolie ran, and the brownie kinda became the supporting player. I guess that is why there is a tomorrow. I did kinda like what I did with the lighting, I used the spider light high and directly behind through the paper as a diffuser.  Truthfully I wrote this based on the camera image, and when I started looking at it on the screen I actually like the picture.  It’s not perfect but it is pretty good.  It tasted awesome too!

Day 16 – You Chicken

I was planning a trip today to try and capture the sunset over the Orrquch Mountain Temple.  Instead I ended up cooking dinner.  This was the beginning of a chicken rice casserole that my mom used to make.

I wish I was able to get the DOF a little further but this was on the burner and cooking/burning so I didn’t have time to set the tripod up. But I think this is OK.

Day 13 – Sunday Dinner

I will talk more about this on my main Blog. This was taken with natural light. I did some basic “styling” to try and make it look better. This like many of my pics are experiments and I hope to return to them again later.

I wish I would have had more accenting colors in this. I need to find eggs that the chickens have eaten more marigolds (odd I know) to get a better color on the noddles.  Finally there is a piece of something on the front piece of chicken that I should have removed.

Day 12 – Now That’s a FIRE

I had planned to go to the Photowalking Utah Millcreek hike, but chickened out a the last minute.  I think that it was a mistake it looks like they had a lot of fun with light painting.  Any way I had to think of a picture to make since I was not going out.  I wanted to try out my new light.  So instead of light painting; I tried hot sauce painting.

I like the concept of this, but the execution is a little weak.  I would have made use of the sauces constinceys.  For the record from left to right Bee Sting Honey n’ Habenero, Frontera Chipotle, Frank’s Extra Hot, Cajohn’s Holy Jolokia, and Sambal.  I might have been a little heavy handed on the post color saturation.

Day 10 – My Thai

I love Thai food. The flavors are so simple and the combination are so complex. It is just great. One of my favorite places to get the fix is My Thai in Salt Lake (link). There are two dishes that I highly recommend the black rice with mango and the hot and sour shrimp soup.

This picture was made with the natural light that comes in from the west facing windows. I asked for a couple of extra basil leaves for the garnish. I love the picture, but if I were to take it again I would move the soy sauce bottle to the left just a smidgen.

Day 9 – After

Several months ago I went and bought a bunch of “burn-your-face-off” pepper. After sitting in the vinegar mixture since I bought them I finally got around to getting them in bottles. You get a two for one this time I couldn’t decide which was my favorite.

The main lighting is from my spiderlight. On the second picture I also popped my flash on the middle bottle to give a little better glow. I would have liked to to have a better backdrop so I could of had some negative space. I really like the pictures and I love the peppers I tried them on Prime Rib at and it was AWESOME!!

Day 1 – The Beginning

Like all journeys this one has a beginning.  This one started in Logan as I went to take pictures in honor of my one year anniversary of getting my Nikon D40.  While I was there Belinda said you need to do a 365 challenge with me.  I wanted to but was unsure.  I took this picture of the sushi just in case I decided that I was going to go through with it.

I arranged the food and cleared the table of things I could see through the view finder, and snapped off a couple of shots.  After adjusting the white balance I liked the color.  I like the lines and and the angles.  I wish the shadows weren’t so harsh.  I Macgyvered a couple of things with this shot.  I used a chopstick wrapper as a flash diffuser (to try and soften the shadows and add some fill) and used a napkin (clean of course) as a “gray” card to set the WB.
